Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a very common, sometimes life threatening disorder that is characterized by excessive snoring or and/or pauses in breathing while you sleep.

Sleep apnea is an ongoing condition that disrupts sleep. When breathing is paused or becomes shallow, one will often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep, making the quality of sleep poor.

Symptoms of sleep apnea include headaches, restless sleep and fatigue. Left untreated, it can lead to more serious health risks such as heart problems, stroke, gastric reflux, depression, stress, anxiety, etc…

For mild sleep apnea, a custom fitted mouth piece or some lifestyle changes (weight loss, smoking cessation, clearing nasal passages) may be helpful.

Sleep apnea appliance therapy involves the selection, fitting and use of a specially designed oral appliance that maintains an open, unobstructed airway in the throat when worn during sleep. Very effective at opening the airway, a sleep apnea appliance is easier to manage than a CPAP machine and can be an excellent alternative to surgery.  These appliances can provide a more restful night’s sleep, improving overall health.
